For me, the award-winning Yamaha A-S was something of an eye opener. While my previous amps and systems had given me many, many hours of enjoyment, it was my A-S that inspired me to build my first serious hi-fi system — a system in which cables mattered, a proper rack replaced the usual stacks of gear, and the speakers are taken down from the walls and positioned for true stereo sound. Fast forward a couple of years, and the A-S moved onto a new home, and was replaced.
Your receiver has 4 HDMI inputs, and one HDMI output, therefore you can use the HDMI from the Blu-ray player to the Receiver, and then another HDMI from the receiver to the TV. Everything should connect to the receiver, then to the TV through one HDMI.
Share on Facebook Graphic equalizers became popular in home audio applications in the late s and throughout the s. They can be easily recognized by their series of slide controls that divide the frequency generally from 20 Hz to 20 kHz, the approximate range of human hearing. The slide controls are centered at zero and slide up and down from zero to 3 db. Hooking up a graphic equalizer to a stereo receiver is a relatively straightforward and simple process.
Graphic equalizers allow you to fine-tune your audio experience. The units came from the factory with easily removable RCA connectors in place. To hook up a graphic equalizer to such a unit, remove the plugs and connect one pair of audio cables to the pre-amp output and the other end into the left and right channel inputs on the rear panel of the graphic equalizer. Plug a second pair of audio cables from the left and right channel inputs of the amp to the output channels on the back of the graphic equalizer.
Turn on both units and adjust the equalizer slide controls to your preferences. Incompatible Stereo Receivers Stereo receivers that do not have pre-amp to amp connections can be hooked up to a graphic equalizer as long as they have an unused tape monitor connection. Plug a pair of RCA audio cables into the input sockets on the rear of the graphic equalizer. Connect the other end to the “Tape Monitor” outputs on the rear of the receiver.
Yamaha RX-A Home theater enthusiasts are well aware of the limitless possibilities when possessing a high-end home theater receiver. The more budget conscious consumers are understandably not and will likely settle with home theater receivers that cost less than half the price of these high-ends. High price also means powerful internals including watts of power to play with 10 HDMI ports 8 in and 2 out.
Four ways to get sound from your Smart TV back to your receiver. I recently bought a Samsung UHD TV Smart TV and am using Yamaha receiver with surround. Hook up to a free port on your receiver, then whenever you want to hear the TV’s smart apps in surround sound, just switch the receiver to the input that corresponds with that port.
It switches all your sources, decodes the various audio formats, upscales your video when appropriate , and maybe even provides networking capabilities and other goodies. It can also be the scariest thing. When it comes to choosing a receiver, there’s an insane number of options. It can be really daunting to go through all of the specs, let alone the many makes and model numbers.
I don’t mean that in an insulting way. Being a reporter in the Consumer Electronics industry, I see all of the Yamaha announcements and report on them accordingly. And they’ve always had a reputation for high performance gear.
Check the warning messages to correct your speaker settings. Page 41 Start playback on the selected source component or select a broadcast station. Use this feature Audio input jack select to switch the input jack assigned to an input source when more than one jacks are assigned to an input source. For example, you can enjoy listening to classical music while viewing beautiful scenery from the video source on the video monitor.

In addition to the pair of HDMI inputs, there are three component inputs along with several S-Video and composite inputs. There are also eight analog input jacks for discrete multichannel sources and eight pre-outs if you prefer to use outboard amplification. Yamaha’s YPAO is a proprietary auto-calibration system, though the basic procedure is the same as all other such systems. Using a supplied microphone, the AVR emits test tones from the speakers, analyzes the data, and determines the size, distance, and levels for all your speakers.
Additionally, it sets one of three EQ patterns to provide the best frequency response in your listening space. Unfortunately, YPAO was not as simple to set up as it should have been. After you plug in the mic and the onscreen menu comes up, there are a few options you need to set before calibration can start. It took me a couple of tries to figure this out, and I’m pretty seasoned when it comes to setting up AVRs.
If I find something a tad confusing, I immediately become concerned about the average consumer. Prior to starting the calibration process, you must select the EQ type—Natural, Flat, or Front—to determine the frequency-response curve associated with the auto setup. I tried two of the EQ types to see how much difference there is between them, starting with the Flat setting. In the Flat mode, center imaging was slightly skewed to the right, and the bass was just too heavy, lacking definition and clarity.
Then I redid the auto setup after changing the EQ setting to Natural. Center imaging of the vocals improved, and the bass was smoothed out a bit, but it was still overwhelming.
In the past, speakers were designed to reproduce bass frequencies, so the need for seperate subwoofers were non-existant. When the size of speakers began shrinking, the need for subwoofers to handle bass increased. In learning The ‘Bassics’ of Bass Management , you’ll discover that receivers figure out what speakers should get bass digitally, and send the appropriate bass information to a powered subwoofer using a line-level connection.
But before receivers were digital, bass management had to be handled by the subwoofer using a age-old technology. Subwoofers have undergone some serious change in the past decade. Intitially, most subwoofers were passive.
Yamaha RX-V Channel AV Receiver Review. If you have these types of components and would prefer to connect the receiver to the TV using a single HDMI cable, then consider upgrading to Yamaha’s RX-V, a step-up model which includes analog to digital video transcoding.
Page 1 Page 2 As I have stepped in to oversee the direction of this magazine, I find myself tempted to play with the gear again. We have an incredible team of qualified veteran editors putting the latest entries in our industry to the test, but the temptation to participate is overwhelming. So I hired myself to grab one of this issue’s gems. Now as a thirty-five-year audiophile who built tube amp kits back in the late ’60s, you would think I would challenge Manoj and tackle one of the latest tweaky toys.
One thing that I have found over these many years is the older I get, the less complicated I want my gear. I haven’t owned a receiver in about twenty years now. From receiver to integrated amplifier to separates is the path of most addicted geeks like me. What has happened to most of us is that we own multiple systems:
Are you sure you want to delete this answer? Yes Sorry, something has gone wrong. Your receiver supports HDMI audio, so no, you do not need to hook up an optical cable from the PS3 to the receiver for audio.
Dec 22, · Just hook them up directly to the receiver and run the YAPO setup and see how it sounds. My only issue would be that the cubes dont go low enough and the internal crossover in the Yamaha probably wont go high enough so you may find that you may have some missing frequency’s in the Hz area.
Wireless connectivity can be buggy No surround support In an era of soundbars and built-in speakers, AV receivers seem to be getting less common. After all, in CDs are well and truly on their way out, as streaming services and wireless features become standard. Yamaha has tried to combine the classic AV receiver with modern functionality — and the result is the Yamaha R-N We put the Yamaha R-N to the test to find out.
Design and setup The Yamaha R-N is actually a very easy receiver to set up. The receiver supports CD players or any other line input, as well as two sets of stereo speakers here. The receiver also has an optical input, which is good news for those that want to connect their TV directly to the unit. Once all your physical connections are set up, you can connect the device to your Wi-Fi network.
This, unfortunately, is a step that we had a lot of trouble with.
