Rising 1, meters south of the city center, flat-topped Table Mountain is the most photographed landmark in South Africa and a constant reminder that nature is queen in this stunning seaside city. Built from massive beds of sandstone and slate, the mountain forms the northern end of the Cape Peninsula and lies within Table Mountain National Park. The park protects an astounding diversity of plants and more than 1, flower species – the planet’s richest floral kingdom – as well as animals such as cute snub-nosed dassies rock hyraxes , caracals, and baboons.
Within the park, Devil’s Peak flanks the mountain on the east, and Lion’s Head on the west, while the crags known as the Twelve Apostles loom over the beach resorts on the Atlantic coast. A layer of clouds, called the “tablecloth” frequently cloaks the mountain’s peak, but when the clouds clear, visitors can enjoy spectacular views of Cape Town and the entire Cape Peninsula from the summit. Bring a sweater as it can be cold and windy at the top.
For those short on time, and energy, a revolving cableway climbs to the summit, covering the distance of 1, meters in seven minutes. The cableway runs daily – except in high winds, so it’s a good idea to check the website or call for current conditions before heading out. Also to avoid long lines, try booking tickets online. Those wishing to summit the mountain on foot can choose between more than different routes varying in difficulty.
Depending on the starting-point, the climb takes between two to four hours. For superb views of Table Mountain and the best vantage point to photograph this iconic landmark, hike or drive up Signal Hill or Lion’s Head – both offer stunning views from their summits. The site was bequeathed to the state by Cecil Rhodes in and the gardens were established in to preserve the country’s indigenous flora – one of the first botanical gardens in the world with this mission.
Battle of Karbala, Brooklyn Museum Husayn, Ali’s younger son and brother to Hasan, initially resisted calls to lead the Muslims against Muawiyah and reclaim the caliphate. Yazid asked Husayn to swear allegiance bay’ah to him. Ali’s faction, having expected the caliphate to return to Ali’s line upon Muawiyah’s death, saw this as a betrayal of the peace treaty and so Husayn rejected this request for allegiance.
There was a groundswell of support in Kufa for Husayn to return there and take his position as caliph and imam, so Husayn collected his family and followers in Medina and set off for Kufa. En route to Kufa, he was blocked by an army of Yazid’s men which included people from Kufa near Karbala modern Iraq , and Husayn and approximately 72 of his family and followers were killed in the Battle of Karbala.

Cape Town, Western Cape to enhance multi-billion halal tourism sector And as a result, Cape Town and the Western Cape plan to reposition as specialist tourist destinations for Islamic followers. The summit seeks to explore tourism opportunities to offer a holistic tourism experience for Muslim tourists as, based on tourist figures, opportunities for loyal tourism markets from the Middle East abound for the Western Cape.
While halal is commonly understood to refer to meat and food products prescribed by Islamic law, delegates at the summit said this has been and could be applied to other aspects of the tourism experience when attracting Muslim tourists. Halal is an Arabic word that means permissible. Ultimately, the province and the city expect to become a tourism destination of note for Muslims, not only in the food services sector, but in pharmaceuticals, clothing retail, entertainment and investment.
De Lille said the city would work decisively to draw Muslim tourists. It is also home to the oldest mosque in the country, dating back years. When we lobbied for a direct air travel line between Istanbul and Cape Town, this is what we were looking to. Halal services constitute one of the fastest growing sub-sectors in tourism globally,” said De Lille. Cape Town Tourism is investigating what more can be done to achieve this.

Photo by Sabelo Mkhabela. Dee posted on her Facebook page on the night, shortly after her performance, “Last night I performed in front of people. He would later tweet that the new wave of South African hip-hop will come from Cape Town. Which is far from being a lie. The new age Cape Town rappers are onto something. A day after the performance, Dee Koala is holed up in a hotel room with fellow rapper Amilca Mezarati and their manager Ta Ledza. She’s lethargic, but she’s present. She’s having chicken and a Black Label ngud’.
She says Major League Gardens had way too many people for her liking, as she is claustrophobic. What she and Amilca took from the show was the professionalism and large scale of the event, which is never heard of for hip-hop shows in Cape Town.

Nor the evils of the worldwide Islamic Inquisition which — not in the 16th century but now, in the 21st, condemns Muslim apostates to barbaric execution. Instead, aggressive White androphobes of all genders which I can no longer count are decimating the philogynous and egalitarian West. Equality psychos are tearing down the most egalitarian society that ever existed except for initial communist experiments, before they turned bloody. American Jews, at the apex of the greatest fortune and philosemitic tolerance their long diaspora has ever bestowed on their kind, are busy supporting all the ideologies and policies that demolish their safe harbor and build up their Muslim, Black and Third World enemies.

Arabic manuscripts in Cape Muslim Families 22 August By Saarah Jappie In Muslim households scattered across the greater Cape Town area, sequestered in boxes, cupboards and trunks, there are handwritten books dating back as early as the late eighteenth century. They were penned by students, schoolmasters, practitioners of mysticism and others in the Muslim community during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, and have been handed down and preserved through the generations of Cape Muslim families.
When thinking of Islamic manuscripts in Africa, the town of Timbuktu often springs to mind. Because of academic projects such as the one I myself am involved in , international media interest and other forces, Timbuktu has become a strong symbol of Islamic writing cultures on the continent.

Back in the s Frank Sinatra sang about how love and marriage go together like a horse and carriage. But these days, for some couples, love seems to be able to get by pretty well on its own. And, given the cost, people have to think carefully about whether they can afford the white dress and big wedding. It’s interesting that the number of weddings took a big dip in , when the global recession started to bite. Three types of marriages are recognised in South African law.
Civil marriages, by far the most common, are carried out, or solemnised, by licensed marriage officers at the department of home affairs or by religious marriage officers at chapels or religious buildings.
