Installation took under a half hour and required only a Philips screwdriver since I was just replacing an existing thermostat instead of installing a new one from scratch. Since this thermostat controls the line voltage supply to the heater, if power to the circuit is not shut off, the installer could receive a severe volt shock.

Prep Work Run the sheathed cable from your circuit breaker to your thermostat location. I have 2 baseboard heaters currently connected to a rotary thermostat. I am replacing the thermostat with a programmable digital thermostat which can be wired either as single pole L1 only or double pole L1 and L2. There were 2 black wires from the load and 2 red wires from the line in the wiring diagram for the existing installation. The installation worked, but I noticed that the room is always hot. The actual reading is 73 degrees no matter how low I set the thermostat.
Apparently, only one heater is cycling or switching on and off while the other heater is on all the time. It seems to me that I should have wired it only as single pole L1 only and just left the second black wire disconnected. The instructions for the new thermostat say that only L1 is switched during normal operation. But then, doesn’t that mean that only 1 baseboard heater is connected? How do I connect the wires so that my single thermostat will control the 2 heaters?
Look inside the box and see if there is a red and black for each cable. To wire it as a single pole you would need to splice two wires together. You should confirm which wires are your hots with a tester or lightbulb. Also double check the wiring diagram for the thermostat.

You need to find out which wires came from the panel and which wires go to the heaters. Many line voltage thermostats for electric baseboard heaters have two poles intended for switching both hot wires of a volt circuit.
But in practice both don’t make or break exactly at the same time temperature. You can if you wish to control one of the hot wires on each of two circuits using one double pole thermostat. It may be desirable to swap the wires on the two poles if the heater in the colder part of the room doesn’t come on first. You need to stay within the watts or amperes rating of each of the poles. You stated that the 3 heaters draw a combined watts. For heating considered continuous use , one 20 amp circuit can supply at most watts.
You can take you chances and just put it back together the way it was if there was just one 20 amp circuit for the 3 heaters, Two branch circuits may not be combined at an outlet box or junction box to be controlled by the same single pole switch or thermostat even if the switch can take the combined number of amperes. You will most likely be working on circuits that carry volts; a shock from this voltage can be deadly and even a simple shorted wire near fingers will produce a very nasty burn. Remove the old unit. Most are connected via wire nuts to wires coming from inside the new thermostat, but some can have screw terminals to attach wires to. I’ve an indoor boiler with a 9 gallon water jacket and have it plumbed to pump the hot water through three baseboard heating zones with each pump controlled by its own zone thermostat. For the first 10 years, this wood boiler took the place of an oil boiler, unless I was gone and couldn’t keep the wood fire going. The last 25 years the oil boiler was replaced with a gas boiler for backup.
Usually only put the system in this mode if needing very little night-time heat and just build one small fire in the evening.

Check your manual where to find your diagnostic connector the one they put a jumper on for smog check, and where the diagnostic codes are checked ; it is usually in the engine compartment, or maybe under the stee…ring wheel.
Somewhere in or around it there should be the IGN- hookup. Some other possibility would be to check for the ignition- cable coming out of the distributor that is if you have a distributor. My 91 Toyota has both, but I hooked my tach to the IGN- right besides the diagnostic connector in the engine compartment.
That also means be careful with the cable not getting frayed or where you place the screws if you hook the tach to the chassis. I would recommend hooking it to a plastic part of the console, or place it over a rug or rubber glove so that the tach does not touch ground chassis.
